Important Security Duties At A Drug Rehab Center

If you're an experienced security officer who has worked in one type of environment for a period of time and feels that a change might be in order, you can look online to see what other opportunities are available in your area. While there are lots of security professionals who work in malls, residential areas, and community buildings, there is also security staff who report to duty at drug rehabilitation centers. Depending on the size of one of these centers, it may have a need for several trained security officers. Here are some duties that will be a part of your day in this environment.

Contraband Prevention

The introduction of contraband is a serious issue at drug rehab centers. Some people may occasionally try to sneak illicit substances into the facility to sell or distribute. As a security officer, part of your job will be to prevent anything prohibited from being able to enter. This means that you may need to supervise when family members visit the center to see their loved ones. For example, you might have to check visitors to ensure that they aren't carrying anything that isn't allowed in the center.

Staff Protection

Some patients at drug rehab centers may occasionally act aggressively toward staff members. As a security officer, you'll be responsible for protecting staff and even other patients from those who begin to act violently. Your training will allow you to de-escalate certain situations verbally, but there may be times that you have to physically restrain someone so that they don't do harm to anyone else at the center. Depending on the specifics of the incident, it's possible that you may have to keep the person subdued until the local police department can respond to further deal with the situation.

Access Control

Rehab centers need to control who visits, given that many of the patients are in a vulnerable state. A patient's family may specifically request that a certain friend of a patient doesn't visit, as this person may be a drug user themselves. Security officers will be responsible for controlling access to the rehab center. You'll likely have a list of people who are not permitted to visit, and need to check the IDs of anyone who arrives to ensure that they're not on this list. If working as a security officer at a rehab center interests you, look online for job opportunities in your area.
